I don't know if the phrase ‘ Buddha is a bellhop' is meant to be derogatory. ( although it certainly sounds so ) But there seems to be many, many parallels between the sayings attributed to Buddha and those attributed to Christ. Nothing I've read thus far, has convinced me that one ( Jesus or Buddha ) was superior to the other ( in terms of his mystical insights ). There are in fact many parallels between early Christianity, and far more ancient religions, as Gnosticism has also attested. A good book on this subject is Tom's Harpur's ‘ The Pagan Christ'
I personally subscribe to precepts which speak of the ‘ essential unity of all the great religions'. I don't know who said this originally, but I love this analogy :
‘ All the world's religions ( and all the world's sciences too - once science embraces its own deep-seated spirituality ) can be likened to the lines of longitude on the globe, appearing at first to wildly diverge, yet inevitably intersecting at the opposite pole.'
