Default Going Beyond

The spiritual path back to God leads through many steps and stages. As we grow and evolve the signposts that are most useful to lead us along our personal path evolve and change as well. And, as we grow closer to God, our concept of God also evolves.

When God was first revealed to the Israelites by Moses, the signposts took the form of the Ten Commandments:

I. Thou shall not have other gods before me
II. Thou shall not make idols
III. Thou shall not take the name of God in vain
IV. Remember the Sabbath Day
V. Honor your father and mother
VI. Thou shall not murder
VII. Thou shall not commit adultery
VIII. Thou shall not steal
IX. Thou shall not lie
X. Thou shall not covet

Some useful rules for living, but sounds pretty negative for the most part doesn't it?

The original concept of God for the Jewish people might be considered by some to be fairly primitive: an angry God, a jealous God, a God that smites enemies and even a God to be feared. However, let's not be too judgemental, the path to God must start somewhere, and oftentimes it starts in a negative form. From a spiritual or religous perspective this teaching could be phrased as such...

"Avoid evil and don't be bad or you will go to Hell"

Those who are, or have been, parents of small children may understand this. The small child must oftentimes be taught from a basis of "don't do such-and-such". For example, the young child may not understand the dangers related to playing on the stairs, or playing with the electrical outlets. The most direct teaching that the parent can provide to keep the child safe, might be "Don't play in the street, or you will get a spanking!" As parents we naturally love our children dearly, and therefore we strive to protect them as much as we humanly can from the pitfalls of life. We may install stairway gates, and electrical outlet safety covers, but there may be some dangers that they are still exposed to. From a perspective of love the parent may even use fear as a basis to teach the child in order to preserve it from unneeded pain and protect it's life. "Sarah, I told you not to climb the bookcase! Don't make me spank you!". However as children grow in their ability to understand, parents can make a shift from teaching their children what not to do, to teaching their children what they should do.

This leads to the second signpost, the second way that we are directed along our spiritual path back to God. We move from fear and guilt based motivation, towards more positive motivations. Using our analogy of children, as they grow we are able to move to teaching them what is good and right to do: "John, if you can clean your room, you will get to watch your TV show", or "Please be a good boy and you will make your mommy and daddy so proud of you, we may even buy you a new toy."

When those on the spiritual path begin the second way, of striving to be good and virtuous and even holy, the impetus, the drive is often for the reward, just like the child trying to earn their parents approval and possibly a new plaything. This represents a big improvement over the first type of teaching. We have moved from negative reinforcement to more positive reinforcement. From a spiritual perspective this could be phrased as...

"If you are a good person, you will go to Heaven".

Given the choices between Hell and Heaven, who wouldn't pick Heaven!

The Golden Rule of "Do unto others, as you would have them do unto you" and the Indian teachings of Karma inspire us to be good, for surely we would want good to be returned to us in turn.

Consider for a moment that the two signposts discussed so far, the negative and positive, are two sides of the same coin. Even though there may be a useful progress in moving from the negative teachings to the positive teachings we are still holding that same coin. All we have done is flipped the coin over to focus on the shiny golden side, the darker tarnished side is still in our hands, or minds or hearts. By clinging to the shiny side of the coin, we can never release the dark side of the coin. The process of focusing on only positives, no matter how noble or beautiful automatically defines a limited space, a space that excludes the other half, the negative half. By holding on to Heaven as our ultimate, we perpetuate Hell. By choosing to "not be Evil", we provide the fuel for Evil.

This is a difficult teaching for many. It was easy to shift our thinking from not being bad towards being good. But to abandon being good? Giving up notions of Heaven? For some this is nothing less than blasphemy. This is where many draw the line and will go no further. They cling tightly to their ideas of being on the right side of things, never realizing that by fighting evil, they merely perpetuate evil.

This is the problem of viewing things through duality. As you can see in the Ying Yang symbol, the outline of the light half of the symbol, defines the dark half. But what lies beyond duality? Notice the Yin Yang's two small inner circles. They are a subtle teaching that even the dark contains the light, and even the light contains the dark. This provides a hint of what lies beyond.

The two teachings dicussed so far can take us very far, but they can not take us all the way home to God because God is Everything that ever was, is or will be. God is All. God is wholeness, and if we cling to only "half" of God, we will be unable to accept the full majesty of our Creator. It is through transcending the lesser realities of Good and Evil, that we can begin to grasp this majesty.

By moving beyond avoiding Hell as well as striving for Heaven, we can go beyond the realms of Heaven and Hell into the glory of full and complete Union with God. When we can accept all that is in every moment, we are accepting the All that Is, the Source, God. Through our evolving thoughts about God, we go from ideas of "not being bad" into "being good" which ultimately is replaced by pure "Being". In other words, don't try to be good, just "be". And in the fullness of your Beingness the signposts that were used before are dissolved and we simply are, we transcend duality and arrive at the ultimate reality. Beyond judging and labeling situations, actions and motivations as good or bad, into the holiness of wholeness. We see that the dark and light aspects that battled in the realm of dualism were like the dark and light parts of a beautiful work art. The whiteness of the paper and the darkness of the markings come together in total harmony to create an incredible drawing, an amazing creation, the perfect Creation of God.

Also if you take your yen yang sign and flip it over and stack another two on top. the same way one over lapping the other and repeat this process you will get a wave length for light or magnetic current.
